DVD A More Perfect Union
This is a “must have” for every classroom! Your students will experience the passion, frustration and exhilaration in this gripping account of the Federal Convention of 1787. This educational version of the popular PBS docu-drama includes commentary never before seen on TV. It will hold the attention of your students for the entire 112 minutes, but if you want to break up the viewing there are five educational segments lasting 20-30 minutes each.
Following are some credentials of the DVD “A More Perfect Union”
It was made under the direction of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, which has officially recognized this film as being “of exceptional merit” and has given their seal of approval.
It has received extensive viewing through PBS showings.
It has been a featured segment on Channel One for all public schools.
The History Channel has sought to acquire the exclusive rights for showing this movie.
It has received several gold and silver awards in national and international film festivals.
Poster-Size Reproductions
Your teachers are going to love displaying the beautiful reproductions of the original U.S. Constitution (18x24) and the painting depicting the Convention (20x30) along with storyboards and diagrams. These images are faithful and true reproductions of the originals.
The painting by Howard Chandler Christy depicts 38 founders and one secretary signing the Constitution on September 17, 1787 at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. In the late 1930's Christy was commissioned to paint a 20x30 foot oil work entitled “Signing the Constitution” which was dedicated in 1940 and now hangs in the U.S. Capitol. It took three years to research and six months to paint. Howard Chandler Christy was one of America's most distinguished illustrators, whose work, like that of Norman Rockwell, successfully captured the pulse of America. Included with the painting is a full-color exciting and informative storyboard describing the “Critical Period” that led up to the Signing of the Constitution, Colonel Nicola’s scheme to make George Washington King of America, James Madison’s tenacity in getting the Constitutional Convention underway, the debate that followed, Benjamin Franklin’s famous plea, and much more! Also included is a full-color diagram that provides the name of each man in the painting.
The 18x24 image of the Constitution of the United States is authentic. It shows all four pages of the Constitution the same way they looked when they were first signed. It has been printed on parchment style paper simulating the type of paper on which the real Constitution was written. There is a descriptive caption as well as a storyboard that describes the difference between a republic and a democracy, what kind of a republic we have, the difference between tyranny and anarchy, division of powers, quotes from our founders and much more! The storyboard is a great aid for teachers that succinctly and accurately describe the essence of our founding document, the Constitution!
Student Booklets
In addition to the DVD and the reproductions, you will also receive 30 student booklets that are 6 ? inches tall and 3 ? inches wide and contain 48 pages of our founding documents including The U.S. Constitution, The Bill of Rights and all subsequent amendments and The Declaration of Independence. Each booklet includes quotes from the founding fathers, an index for the Constitution and all of the Amendments, and important dates to remember. There is also a place for the student to pledge to read the Constitution and to commit 10 other people to read the Constitution.
Mini Freedom Gallery
Finally, your teachers will receive all 24 images of our very popular Freedom Gallery, shrunk down to fit in a 4x6 mini photo album. The Freedom Gallery is a collection of six famous paintings, our three founding documents and George Washington’s Call to Arms, complete with descriptive storyboards and diagrams that tell the story of the founding of America. The paintings are from our national treasure and include The Spirit of ’76 by Archibald M. Willard, Writing the Declaration of Independence by J.L.G. Ferris, The Declaration of Independence by John Trumbull, Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, Signing the Constitution by Howard Chandler Christy and Our Flag by Fred Tripp. A very informative storyboard for each painting and document tell the story chronologically of the founding of our nation! Two diagrams identifying the individuals depicted in The Declaration of Independence and Signing the Constitution complete the gallery.
What teachers are saying about this package
The Roots of Freedom Constitution Celebration Kit is a great resource for teachers at a reasonable price. The DVD is a realistic portrayal of the Constitutional Convention and the arguments and challenges that were addressed during those four important months in Philadelphia. Giving each student their personal copy of the Constitution as found in the Constitution Booklets gives them ownership of the document and seems easier for them to tackle. The pictures included in the kit provide a great source of material a teacher can utilize to hook their students into careful analysis of this most important period in our nation’s history.

My heart was filled with pride as I read these sacred writings and documents and I was thrilled when I watched “A More Perfect Union.” In fact, I have replayed it many times. These sacred words of our Founding Fathers should be embedded in the hearts of every American. As a citizen of the United States I feel renewed. My roots have been strengthened and I feel that I will be a better American. As we trace our roots back to the beginning of our country America has an incredible story to be told. Sacred documents such as The Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, and The Bill of Rights are all part of this story. Roots of Freedom provide for you and me this incredible journey through history.
